Author's Notes on Rediscovered Hearts
Moved from ff.net. This information also exists in some form on
dv_hearts. I'm just trying to keep the poor readers over at the pit from having visit so many places. There's also some new information available to readers here, so if you've followed this series, you may want to take a look.
The Fire and Water/Rediscovered Hearts AU
This was my first major fanfiction epic. It is archived on the D/V archive as a The Rediscovered Hearts Series, since RH is the bulk of the story. The Livejournal community where the fic now permanently resides and sequels appear first is called dv-hearts.
Fire and Water is a six part part AU series written for
nerca_beyul (The Noble French Fry's) Livejournal challenge community, called
sg_challenges. It was begun early in season 9, when I came around to being a Daniel/Vala shipper. In keeping with the word limit on sg-challenges, the chapters are 1k words max, so a bit different from One Path or my other fics posted here.
The AU asks the question of what might have occurred between Daniel and Vala if Vala had managed to ring back after destroying the first Ori Supergate. Both Fire and Water and it's sequel, Rediscovered Hearts, were written prior (heh) to season 10, so I chose to assume that the Ori got the message and stayed out of our galaxy, simply because it would be easier than trying to encorporate an Ori plot that had nothing in common with whatever would happen during season 10.
The first chapter is a poetic introduction to the series, from the POV of both Daniel and Vala during the events of Avalon. The rest of the story is strictly prose, so if you're not crazy about poetry, stick around for chapter 2.
The AU was was written as a series because I fully intended to end it there and readers asked for more.
In chronological order, the series is:
-Fire and Water (the original 6 part story)
-Interlude ( a loosely interconnected collection of fics set in the same universe as Fire and Water. They were written after the series itself, so I don't include them as part of it. )
-Rediscovered Hearts (a 46 chapter epic set in the third year of Daniel and Vala's marriage, involves the birth of their first child and an exploration of Vala's past.)
-In The Moment (a loosely interconnected collection of fics similar to the Interlude set. They were written shortly after I wrote Rediscovered Hearts, but take place before Beyond Breaking.
-The Promise of Thorns (an SGA fic set in the same verse. It's the SGA equivalent to Fire and Water, kicking off a crossover sequel called Beyond Breaking.)
-A Rediscovered Christmas (a Christmas series set in the RH universe. Hijinx abound when Vala's Santa Trap actually works. Just silly, but I had lots of fun writing it.
-Beyond Breaking ( the planned followup to RH and Promise. I and some of the RH readers on LJ readers were speculating about season 10 and what might happen if the Ori returned in the RH AU somewhat later than they did in canon. About six chapters have been written, but the end of SG-1 s10 and SGA s3 really blew the fic out of the water. It will be done eventually, just don't know when.
-Idyll Days (the final collection of short interconnected fics in this AU, set after the resolution of the Ori conflict)
--Other Announcements--
I have been reading through the six completed chapters of the direct RH sequel, and I would really like to complete the story, especially since I am so profoundly disheartened by the direction in which SGA seems to be heading (No, that statement has nothing to do with the ship wars.) but the format of the story just isn't working for me. I can't get a handle on which elements of the Atlantis canon I need to keep, so the switching back and forth between Earth and the Pegasus galaxy in each chapter is not working. I know everything I need to know about the SG-1 elements, so I am in the process of re-thinking the format. At this point, there is a lot of ground I would like to cover.
I'd like to bring back Jade and Martouf. I really liked them as a couple, and I'd like to really do some exploring of the Tok'ra and how the existence of a cloned Egeria will affect them as a people.
I have an idea that could bring a better sense of closure for certain characters, including Martouf, Janet, and Jonas Quinn, than the series allowed them to get. It would involve some exploration of Kelownan culture and the Jaffa, introduction of a few more OCs, as well as development on some minor characters like Aris Boch and Alek, not to mention Vala's sisters, who I always thought would have been a great addition to canon, but hey, I guess the writers couldn't handle any more Mal Doran women...
Then of course there is the whole "Teal'c and Cam's apartment humor" concept that deserves SO much more face time than it would get in Beyond Breaking, since that story is so angsty.
So I think that the best thing to do is break the story into smaller pieces rather than trying to cover ALL of that ground in Beyond Breaking.
I haven't fully decided how I'm going to do it, but for anyone who's still following this series, rest assured, my love affair with the RH universe is going strong.
Aruna and I are also discussing another long fic in this AU, to be written sometime in the not-so-near future when I'm less busy. This one is not yet titled, but it would involve a crossover between Stargate and Highlander. I have actually wanted to write a HL crossover since I got into Stargate fandom--specifically one not dealing with Methos and/or Tanith--but I had no workable premise.
I have finally gotten HL: The Series and HL: The Raven on DVD--thank you, thank you, thank you, Santa! SGA was recently on sale and I picked up the pertinent seasons at a really good price, so I can do the necessary research for this series now. I don't have a timetable yet, but when I do, I will be posting it.
