Research Question-Iconic Songs

Speaking to a friend recently, I made reference to a couple of songs that I consider to be culturally iconic. (as in, whether you like them or not, you have heard them and would recognize them if they played on the radio-or iTunes, whatever.)

The songs in question were Layla, by Eric Clapton and Your Song by Elton John. The person I was talking to had never heard of either of them and didn't recognize the guitar riff from Layla when I found it on Youtube. Yes, the person is from the US.

It got me thinking. What songs do you think of as culturally iconic?

I'm interested in answers from as many people as possible, but especially from people outside my age group (you didn't grow up in the 80s or attend high school during the late 80s-early 90s.) or from anyone who has spent a significant amount of time living somewhere other than North America.

If you feel like it, I'd also appreciate knowing what some of your favorite songs are, why you like them, and when you first heard them.

Be aware that your answers may end up as future blog fodder.
