Guess what guys…in view of some questions I got about translating my last tut in GIMP and a few differences I have noticed between that interface and PSP while I was fooling around with it last week, I decided to make a GIMP specific tutorial. Yay, me.

We'll be going from this to

*Image and texture credits can be found in my resource post.

Tutorial 06: Charisma Carpenter

Step 1: Choose an image and resize to 100x100.

-- With your image open in GIMP, go to to File>New and open a new blank image, 100x100. Then go back to your original image, copy it and paste into the 100x100 base that you just made. You'll end up with part of her face taking up the whole icon, but don't worry. Now go to Layer > Scale Layer on the image window. Resize it to anything between 75-20 percent, depending on the image. For Charisma, I used 50 %. Then just take your move tool and slide the resized image over until you have something like:

Step 2 Sharpen. Filters>Enhance>Sharpen. Play with the controls until it looks right. I used a setting of 30.

Step 3:Layer Enhancements

Duplicate the base and set to screen at 33.6% opacity.
Duplicate the screen layer twice.
Blur the top screen layer. Filters>Blur>Blur.
Duplicate the base again, drag to the top, and set to soft light at 33.6 %.
Duplicate the base one last time, set to screen and apply a Gaussian blur with horizontal and vertical radius both at 5.0. Depending on how dark or light your original image is, you may have to lower the opacity on this layer. I think mine was somewhere around 70.

Your icon should now look similar to this:

Step 4: Copy and paste this texture as a new layer: and set to overlay at 98.4%.

With your Move tool, position the texture over to the left so that the lines are on the side and not on her face like this:

Step 5 Copy and paste this texture as a new layer: and set to multiply at 15.6%.

Reposition it slightly until you have this.

Step 6: Now take this texture: and set to soft light at 70%.

Erase the areas around the subject's face until you have something similar to:

Step 7: Take this texture, paste as a new layer:

Then rotate it 180 degrees. Layer>Transform> Rotate 180 degrees.
Set to soft light at 100.
Now move the texture to the right some and erase the part over her forehead until you have something like:

Step 8: Take this: Set to soft light at 100 %.

Your icon should now resemble:

Step 9: The border.
Create a new layer and flood fill with whatever color you want.
Select>all
Select>Shrink by 2 px
Select>Feather by 5 px
Edit>cut.

You should now have a 3D look on your icon like this:

Step 10Flatten the image and use the blur tool to soften the edge where the picture meets the bluish area. Then you're done!

Add decorative brushes, text or whatever you like to embellish.
