...these were Rediscovered Hearts...

Ok, I've got another couple of fics done for [livejournal.com profile] sg_challenges Challenge 13. Since the challenge is love + heartbreak you'd THINK I could come up with a new installment for Rediscovered Hearts. But Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo............

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rants_by_james for beta on both of these.

What She Didn't Say

Janet Frasier stepped through the Stargate with a mix of trepidation and relief. Home again, she thought as her team trampled noisily down onto the 'Gate Room floor. Landry was there; the right Landry this time, his face worn and haggard with worry over the Ori plague.

"I have something for you, Sir," she smiled, presenting him with the yellow box she had clutched at her chest since she stepped through the 'Gate on the other Earth. "I have the cure."

Of course, there were explanations that had to be given. For the first few days, though, the weary general gladly took his people at their word, let the doctor work. When the cure began to filter its way out to the public and they knew the nightmare was over, Janet calmly explained how her team had found themselves stranded in another reality--one in which Orlin had returned to cure the plague. She didn't hesitate, nor did her voice betray a hint of what she was holding back. As she spoke, she thought with a bit of private amusement that she felt rather like General O'Neill must have when he returned from the first Abydos mission.

Later though, as she stood in the 'Gate Room again, her vision blurred with tears. This time he would be the one leaving, only there would be no parting embrace. He would only be gone a few days…a short trip back to Abydos. Back home, for him. For her, though, it might as well have been another universe.

As the first hot tear slid down onto her cheek, she reached furtively to brush it away. A quick glance around the room assured her that none of the rest of the team had seen. Then her other hand slowly drifted to her belly and the secret she hid there. Not his. Not really. But almost…

Present

Her forehead rested against the cool of the windowpane, and she stared out at the dull, slate gray sky and the still-empty driveway. As the first hard splatters collided with the glass, she shivered, almost able to feel the cold, wet wind that suddenly picked up the plastic lid of the wading pool and sent it skittering across the yard. She felt her mother's weight slide onto the couch cushion behind her, but she swallowed twice and didn't turn, warm tears now tracking their way down her cheeks.

"He'll be here," she heard close to her ear as strong, gentle arms wound around her. She melted backward, snuggling into the inviting softness of her mother's breast.

"He promised," she sniffed with a nod of agreement, comforted already by the familiar, vanilla-scented closeness. A hand smoothed over her hair, then slid down to caress her back in slow, tender circles.

"Why don't you go and play with your friends?" her mother suggested. "I'll keep watch for a while."

She swallowed again, turning to peer into the kitchen, where a crowd of children were gathered around the festively decorated table or playing party games. "Someone's missing there, too," she said glumly.

Her mother sighed, bending to kiss the top of her hair. "This really is turning out to be an awful birthday, isn't it?" she murmured. "Daddy's gone and your best friend's moved away."

She nodded, coiling her arms tightly around her mother's neck. "Why does Dakara have to be so far?" she whispered tightly. "It's not fair, Mom!

"No, it's not…" her mother began, then suddenly tensed. "Look!"

She twisted in her mother's arms, then let out a squeal of delight. The dirty red pickup pulled into the driveway, and she tore off the couch, racing outside as the two men climbed out. Heedless now of the icy wind or the rain pelting her through the new dress she wore, she flung herself across the yard and into her father's arms.

"Dad! You did come home!"

"I wouldn't be anywhere else, Manda," Daniel said, kneeling to look up at her. "Uncle Jack and I just had to bring back your present."

"What present?" she frowned, looking from him to the grinning, white-haired man a few feet away.

"C'mon," Jack said, gesturing for her to follow as he walked around to the back of the truck.

She ran off after him, trailed by Daniel, who stooped to pick her up when they reached the truck bed. Jack reached for the wet tarp, snapping it back with a flourish.

"Ta-da!" he exclaimed, revealing the unmistakable, stoic form of a Jaffa warrior, who rose from the familiar meditative position with slow grace and offered her a bow.

"Teal'c!" she cried, launching herself from Daniel's arms to his. "You're back from Dakara!"

Despite the awkwardness of the way they were standing, Teal'c caught her easily, and allowed a momentary smile to cross his face. "Indeed I am, AmandaJackson."

Ooh, now I'm interested...

Damn plotbunnies! *beats them off with a stick*

[identity profile] so-out-of-ideas.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really have a plot yet...all I know is Judgement was supposed to end up with a new avatar, have some fluffy stuff with Rommie, and then come into conflict with Remiel...

[identity profile] martyfan.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
The most evil kind of plotbunny is the kind without an actual *plot*. I have far, far too many of those.

Hm...that's what nonsensical one-shots are for? ^_^;;; *shrug*

[identity profile] so-out-of-ideas.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
That's what my brain keeps telling me...but I keep telling my brain that we need to finish Rediscovered Hearts before we start with Andromeda fic of any sort.

[identity profile] martyfan.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have to keep scolding my muses for poking me with new ideas. I want to finish Shadows of the Future before I start anything new...but I have, like, ten other stories lined up already. Some of which already have some written, like my Stargate/Smallville/Superman thing. And the plotkraken, and the sequel to my werewolf Daniel story, and the SotF sister series, and an alternate story to [livejournal.com profile] darkjedprinces' Powerlust...etc.

Muses are helpful, but damn if they aren't totally vicious sometimes when cornered. :P I tihnk throwing out new plot bunnies has to be a defense mechanism or something.

[identity profile] so-out-of-ideas.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
OMG! *beats head against wall* You do NOT have a Stargate/Superman/Smallville story! *cries* That's another thing lurking in my brain...

[identity profile] martyfan.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
...you're KIDDING.

Are my muses planting my thoughts in your head or what?! lol.

[identity profile] so-out-of-ideas.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not kidding...I think it's Urgo...

[identity profile] martyfan.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
D: That explains so much, it's too scary to even think about. lol. If they're anything along the same plotlines, I'm going to be really freaked.

For now, I'm calling mine Bulletproof, and the basic idea is that after about halfway through season five of Smallville (in an alternate universe where stuff happened way earlier, year-wise, and some episodes get thrown out due to inconsistancy), Clark had to go under witness protection to hide from Lex, and got set up as a certain archaeologist instead. :P The reason he can be hurt is he's got a tiiiny bit of kryptonite hidden on his person at all times (once he joins SG-1, he puts it on his dogtags) that makes him just human enough to not be able to use his abilities, but not get totally sick. And then Lex catches up with him, and he has to come clean to SG-1 about who he really is, and things go on from there.

[identity profile] so-out-of-ideas.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, that sounds interesting...

All I know so far in mine is that Daniel and Jack end up stranded in Smallville somehow and Jack and Lex cross paths in a negative way while Daniel is busy befriending Chloe and Clark...

[identity profile] martyfan.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
There aren't nearly enough interesting Stargate/Smallville crossovers. :P But on the other hand, there are barely ANY Stargate/Andromeda crossovers, which is really surprising considering the three (or more) actors they have in common.

But then again, I'm pretty used to mentally crossing fandoms all over the place, so maybe I should shut up. :P The whole time I was watching the big finale in X3: The Last Stand, I was thinking how very Avaricum-Daniel-like it was. And then I got hit with a Stargate/X-Men plotbunny that I fully intend to IGNORE, because enough is enough. ^_^;;;

[identity profile] martyfan.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
(Avaricum is the name of my plotkraken fic, where Daniel is evil and such, BTW.)

[identity profile] so-out-of-ideas.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
I have a half written fic that has existed for about 10 months where Daniel became friends with a group of mutant kids shortly after his parents died...as soon as X3 hit, my brain started *screaming* that it should be revived as an X-Men crossover...

[identity profile] martyfan.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Jeeeez. Sometimes it just feels like the fic-writing part of your brain is going in a million directions, doesn't it? And you only have two hands...

[identity profile] so-out-of-ideas.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed...but I'm *going* to make it finish RH before any X-Men nonsense, Smallville nonsense, She-Ra nonsense, or any of the non-'Gate related stuff it wants to do.

[identity profile] martyfan.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Whoops. Forgot the other i in [livejournal.com profile] darkjediprinces. ^_^;;;

[identity profile] so-out-of-ideas.livejournal.com 2006-06-04 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
See, there, I've done it. Referred to my brain as a separate entity.
