...I'd gotten the D/V fic done...
Well,I'd hoped to have this week's
scifi_five story in this post--which, btw, is the post ep for Counterstrike that
teddibear gave me--but I've just realized how late it's getting. I'm about 1000 words in and maybe half done, so it looks like this will be a long one.
My brain has decided to start using Edmindos and Lynae for future challenges on
scifi_five. This afternoon I finished the story I've been writing for the challenge over on the EF board. It's going to be a series the beginning of a series, so I've decided to post it here for the benefit of anyone who ends up reading Ed/Lynae stuff on
scifi_five. I do hope, however, that this series doesn't turn out to be a very long one since I've also pretty much figured out the plot for my third D/V AU series.
That as yet unnamed series will most likely be longer even than Rediscovered Hearts, so everyone who was so kind in saying that they were sad to see the series end can relax and start anticipating things to come for Daniel, Vala, and Manda--oops, and Nicky too. heh.
Anyway, Edmindos and Lynae are/were a pair of OC lovers that I revamped for
stargatefangurl's fantasy RPG, called Eternal Fire so I don't know if this story should be categorized as fanfiction or original work or what. In any case, it serves as an introduction to them and their world, a completely original place called Aterium. I've written the story just as I would have the first chapter of a new novel or something, so anyone who'd like to read shouldn't be confused. (If there is something you "don't get", it's a safe bet to assume that's because I plan on explaining it in the next chapter.)

Intruder
Storms could blow up with frightening speed in the Mountains of the North, but knowing this did not prepare the Seeker for the sudden, driving wind that pierced his thick robes. It left him numb within minutes, and the cold was so intense that it stabbed when he breathed. Edmindos raised his chin slightly in concentration, creating a molten envelope of warmth around himself, but knew that a storm this fierce would be beyond his power to endure. If he couldn't find shelter, the strain of drawing on the fire magic so long would eventually be too great, and he, like any other traveler, would slip into unconsciousness and freeze.
The moan of the wind cut off his hearing, leaving him almost completely disoriented, but the voice beside him was clear and distinct. The hand on his arm felt firm and sure despite the fact that his whole body had lost sensation. He felt a slight smile tug at his lips as Duric spoke.
"There's a cave at three-thirty, Eddie. Should be about fifty paces," the Adept informed him.
He turned without hesitation, for once not even complaining at Duric's annoying mangling of his name. Under other circumstances, he would have protested that a Seeker with his reputation and standing among his peers ought to be able to comport himself with an appropriate modicum of dignity. Having his own Adept saddle him with such a ridiculous diminutive was incredibly humiliating. At the moment, however, all he was concerned about was reaching the cave before he found himself waking from an icy slumber in the Eternal Lands.
As he neared it, the howling wind deepened, and his sharp ears actually detected a slight echo. The tightness in his chest loosened a little with relief. It would be deep then--more than adequate for waiting out the storm. He staggered in, clinging to the jagged wall for support, but almost immediately frowned at the strange, slightly musky scent of the place. It wasn't unpleasant, but it did indicate the cave was inhabited--and not by any animal he recognized.
"Odd…" he observed, frowning again as he felt forward with his staff. This far up in the mountains, there should have at least been patches of ice at the mouth of the cave, but the staff didn't slip at all. There was also a distinctly magical warmth emanating from deeper within. Although it made him more cautious, Edmindos' own strength was centered in the element of fire, and he felt more drawn to the presence than afraid.
"What?" asked Duric, who had learned to trust his Seeker's perceptive abilities.
"There's something--" he started to say when a powerful gust of the creature's aroma reached his nostrils. The entire cave began to shake with its approach.
"Eddie, it's a dragon!!" Duric shouted, barely pulling the Seeker aside in time to avoid a blow from the huge, triangular shaped head that swung toward him.
"Good job!" Edmindos cried, eyes bulging as a blue-edged vision flared, revealing the beast to his normally blind eyes. "I can't believe you led me in here!"
"Well, how many times have I told you that I don't know everything?" Duric responded with a note of desperation.
A gleaming yellow eye fastened on the Seeker's face, and the dragon reared back. Edmindos raised his staff to ward off the apparent attack, but found it knocked from his grasp by a powerful swipe of the monster's claw. He dove for it, spinning back to his feet as Duric, now in the form of a tiger, sprang in front of him.
"Get out!" the Adept ordered.
"I'm not leaving you!" Edmindos shouted back, spinning the staff in one hand and calling up a fireball with the other.
Duric could easily enough have killed the dragon then, but neither Seeker nor Adept had sensed evil intent in the beast. That, at least, would have warned them away even before they knew what manner of being lived here. No Adept would kill an innocent creature unless circumstances absolutely demanded it. Duric's concern was only to protect him, but alone in the cave, the Adept himself might not survive the battle that would ensue.
Though a Seeker came by his magical gifts through his bond with an Adept, the nature of that bond was complex. Both Seeker and Adept were strengthened by the other. Conversely, however, both were considerably weakened when apart. The magical tie between them not withstanding, however, Edmindos Endaarin had no intention of abandoning his best friend.
He hurled the flame toward the dragon's knee, where the blow should halt but not maim or kill the beast. It struck, and the serpent bellowed in pain, toppling unexpectedly forward. In such close proximity already, there was no time for retreat. Duric leapt, twisting in midair to land on his Seeker, bowling Edmindos to the ground as the tremendous weight of the beast crashed down on them…
***
Edmindos woke to the vague murmur of strange voices. The heat of a nearby fire warmed half his long frame, but his other side felt chilled. Horses snuffled somewhere close as well, but the Seeker's head throbbed and his whole body seemed to be one large, dull ache with an assortment of sharper pains when he tried to concentrate or move. The resulting jumble of pain and unfamiliar sensory information left him disoriented and unable to pinpoint the source of any sound.
"Duric?" he groaned fearfully.
"Shhh," murmured a soft, distinctly female voice. He felt cool fingertips brush his forehead, and gasped as his eyes slowly opened to reveal a woman with long dark hair and limpid blue eyes which caught and held the firelight in an almost mesmerizing fashion.
"I see you…" he said softly, more confused than ever.
"I should hope so, Seeker," she replied, but the image had already begun to fade.
"No, I mean to say---it's not often that I see anyone at all," he explained, struggling to hold the image of her face. Normally, he felt no compulsion to fight the loss of vision; sight itself was disconcerting to him. Something, though, whispered that this stranger ought not vanish again so soon.
"Blind?" she asked, though her voice reflected none of the shock or dismay he expected. He heard only a note of curious interest. "Do all Seekers have such eyes?"
For a moment, his brow furrowed in confusion, but he quickly shook his head. He had been told that the blue centers of his eyes faded and took on a pale cast when he couldn't see. This close to him, she was sure to have noticed the difference. The throbbing in his skull worsened at the motion of his head, however, and the explanation he'd been prepared to give slurred off his lips in a sickening wave of dizziness.
"Perhaps we've talked enough for now," she decided, and he heard her start to rise.
Instinctively, he reached out, fingers closing on a surprisingly well-toned arm. "Wait…please. Where am I?" he asked.
"This is the camp of the Rogue Brotherhood," she replied. "Syjic brought you to us."
"Who?" he asked, perplexed.
"Your dragon?" replied the woman with a touch of laughter in her voice. "You must truly have injured your head, Seeker."
"My…?" he started to ask, but paused at the approach of a pair of heavy boots and jangling armor. The woman gently but firmly moved to break away, and he released her, wondering at his own disappointment.
"Lynae," asked a strange male voice, gruff but not unfriendly. "How's the patient?"
"He seems more than a bit confused, Jaris," the woman replied, her voice shifting away as she turned to look up at the newcomer. "But at least he's conscious."
"It's a start," he agreed with a note of approval. "The dragon will be back to check on him soon, I wager. Help me move the horses. I don't want them to bolt again."
"Aye," she chuckled, rising to stand beside him. "Rest now, Seeker. We'll talk again when your beast's been assured that you yet live."
Edmindos waited until their steps retreated too far to hear and then called again, "Duric?"
This time, he felt the Adept appear, and heard the tiger pad over to lie beside him. There was no reaction from any of the people whose voices he still heard, so he assumed that Duric had had the good sense to remain invisible. A large paw rested lightly on his chest and the tiger let out a small huff of relief.
"You had me scared there for a while, Eddie," he said, his voice uncharacteristically grave.
"What happened?" Edmindos asked, his hand moving slowly up to scratch the tiger's throat, eliciting a rumbling purr. "Why do they think I own a dragon? And don't call me Eddie!"
"You are feeling better," Duric laughed.
"So it seems," Edmindos sighed. "Though I hurt--everywhere. What in holy blazes happened? The last thing I remember was throwing a fireball."
"You hit the dragon in the knee and it fell," explained Duric. "I shielded you--absorbed most of the impact--but with that much weight on us and no time to erect a real barrier, you took a lot yourself. The…erm…dragon's name is Syjic. He's quite old, and apparently not only deaf but blind in one eye. Says you frightened him."
"I frightened him?" Edmindos repeated incredulously.
"Well, when he swung his head, he was really only trying to see what we were," Duric replied. "He was startled when I pulled you aside so quickly, and then when you brought your staff up, he assumed you meant to attack. After you were unconscious, though, he was able to get a good look at you--he's had some dealings with Seekers in years past. Sided with Mt. Albur during the war. He'd seen these Rogues camped in a valley not far off from the cave and took you to them, thinking your own kind would be better able to tend you."
"And you just let a dragon fly off with me?" Edmindos turned a blind glare on his friend.
"I was still recovering myself!" he exclaimed. "You might show a bit of gratitude, you know. I did just save your life again."
"What do you mean, again?" Edmindos asked.
"Need I remind you of the tower incident, Seeker mine?" Duric responded archly.
Edmindos passed a hand over his face at the memory. "If I recall, the tower incident was your fault, Duric."
"Yes, well…" the Adept coughed.
"Right," Edmindos smirked. The expression quickly softened, though and he asked, "What do you know of the woman?"
"Woman?" Duric repeated innocently.
"Yes, the woman who was just here," Edmindos sighed again. "Lynae, the other one called her."
"Oh, her!" the tiger rumbled in amusement.
"She's lovely, Duric. Who is she?" persisted Edmindos.
"Well, how should I know?" Duric replied.
"Don't play coy," the Seeker shook his head. "The visions were your gift to me, remember? You should know better than I that when I chance to see someone, they'll play a part in things to come for us."
"I've told you," Duric gave an exaggerated sigh. "That doesn't mean I can interpret the visions for you."
"But I know you," Edmindos said with an unusual air of determination. "You're withholding something. Now tell me who she is."
"You'll just have to discover that for yourself," Duric said with a laugh.

And yay for a new D/V series! Dose it include the time travel? :) I've just about finished my coat nicking fic, it still needs a little work, and I've had a rather fun idea for this weeks challenge at
Hey, are you feeling any better? Hope so. :)

Yes, I'm feeling better. I still seem to be getting tired easily, though. Hmm. Maybe I just got old really suddenly?
