...I could control the muse...

Wow! Okay, random Sparky fic hit me out of nowhere tonight. Follow up to Hands and The Final Rose set about 3 years later, so we'd be in the 6th year of the Atlantis Expedition. This will be a lead in to the upcoming sequel to Rediscovered Hearts, and it takes place in the same year that Manda was born.
And, because my brain really decided to be cute, I managed to include this week's challenge prompts for BOTH [livejournal.com profile] scifi_five and [livejournal.com profile] sg_challenges. I still haven't written much Sparky or Atlantis in general, but I think this works, and anything that doesn't make sense should be explained in an upcoming fic. *hopeful look*

Title: Fight or Flight
Author: Lionchilde
Summary: AU When an enemy attack blinds Shep, it takes the touch of a rose to remind him that Atlantis will always be home.
Rating: G

Length: 750 words
Pairing: Sparky
Genres: Ever so fluffy...
A/N: This is a follow up to my previous Sparky AU fics, Hands and The Final Rose. It takes place about 3 years later; incidentally the same year that Daniel and Vala's daughter was born in my giant, 47 chapter SG-1 series, Rediscovered Hearts. (That will become relevant in later fics, as I'm planning a crossover series. Written for [livejournal.com profile] sg_challenges and [livejournal.com profile] scifi_five. Spoilers for The Return, Part 1

Fight or Flight

John Sheppard stood staring out at an ocean he couldn't see. His face was wet, though not with the spray of the sea, and he didn't turn at the sound of the familiar footsteps behind him. She stopped a few feet back and waited. His shoulders stiffened and he wondered bitterly how long it would be before the excuse that he didn't see her there would stop working.

Finally, she stepped forward, and he felt her warm hand brush his arm. He tensed, but she only leaned quietly against the railing beside him. When she spoke, her tone was soft, but held no hesitation.

"I heard a rumor that you were leaving," she said.

"It's not a rumor," he replied curtly.

"Well, then I've got a problem," she told him.

"What would that be?" he asked.

"Ronon still seems to think that the inability to see has nothing to do with your leadership abilities," she replied. "He and the rest of your team insist they won't work with another CO. And other than Rodney? I can't order them to."

"Well," he snorted. "I'd hate to say anything to detract from Ronon's good opinion of me, but the Air Force, in its infinite wisdom, seems to disagree."

"You're being given a medical discharge, aren't you?" she asked. "Teyla tells me the offer the Athosians made still stands…"

"To do what?" he snapped, turning suddenly to face her. "Live here on my friends' charity? Look, Teyla and Ronon feel responsible--"

"As far as I knew, the Athosian people didn't offer anyone a free ride, John," she interrupted. "And I've read the report. By all accounts, Ronon and Teyla have nothing to feel responsible for. I think…you're just feeling sorry for yourself."

"I'm blind!" he exclaimed, raising his hands and slapping them forcefully back down against his sides. "What do you want from me, Elizabeth?"

"Everything," she replied, leaning forward to catch his hand.

Before he could pull away, she guided his fingers downward, closing them around something he quickly recognized as the stem of a rose. He hadn't seen it, of course. He hadn't even imagined that she would be holding it, and his jaw dropped. He'd promised her one on Valentine's Day three years ago--promised he'd give it to her someday, when he could do so face to face. Well, now he guessed he could, but he didn't quite believe that she would still want it. Not because he was blind, necessarily, but because accepting the rose would have meant leaving here, and after everything they'd gone through for the city, he couldn't imagine Elizabeth being happy anywhere else.

"What are you--what are you gonna do? Come back to Earth with me?" he asked hoarsely.

"If that's what you want," she replied.

"No," he shook his head, his free hand drifting awkwardly up to her cheek. "Elizabeth, this is our home."

"Yes, it is," she nodded. He could feel her lips curve upward against his palm as she continued. "You were the one who made me realize that, remember?"

He smiled a little in response as his own words echoed back to him. "I'll be damned if I'm gonna let a bunch of replicators take our home away from us."

In the end, those Ancients had been killed, but the rescue mission succeeded in saving General O'Neill and Richard Woolsey. With the replicators destroyed, the team had returned to Atlantis, with Elizabeth once again in charge of the expedition.

The Wraith still believed the city had been destroyed, se days, there was an uneasy peace, which perhaps had been the problem. They'd let their guard down, gotten comfortable, and walked right into a Genii trap. Or more accurately, a trap laid by Kolya. No one had expected another kidnapping attempt, and this time his embittered adversary had decided to carve Sheppard up a piece at a time if his ransom demands weren't met.

Carson hadn't been able to repair the damage to his corneas, and the Air Force had ultimately relieved him of duty. It seemed, though, that his friends--his family--weren't quite so willing to send him packing. Or let him run away.

"Yeah," he nodded. "I do."

"I'm blind!" ... well, honestly i hope that this will never happen in the show ^___^ wouldnt be that much fun, but its cute that elizabeth is there for him and remind him of the sentences which he told ther one time XD

lol, thanks. Don't worry, he won't be staying blind forever. It was a rather sudden, random burst of inspiration. I had to have SOME reason for them to get together that wouldn't involve lame secret marriages or anyone being fired.

fairly soon, as it's a lead in to a new long crossover series. Thank you very much for the compliment.
