New fandom + New ships=HAPPY ME.

Anybody who didn't like the Bionic Woman pilot episode might want to give the show another look. It's gotten better. A lot.

Okay, I reserved judgement on this show for a few reasons. Firstly, I've been avoiding new fandoms like the plague for about 2 years, and that trend only increased when SG-1 was cancelled. Still kinda mourning there. Yeah, call me crazy. It's just that, I mean, I haven't gotten that invested in a fandom since TNG, and even though we knew that one was ending, I got hit pretty hard. SG-1's cancellation kind knocked me for a loop. All the other shows I've been into recently have sort of messed up my ships, including SGA, which is disappointing to say the least. Add to that certain of my favorite characters being written out/killed off/abused by writers, and TV and I have not had a very steady relationship lately.

I wasn't all that thrilled with the pilot of Bionic Woman. I rather agreed with [livejournal.com profile] meneleth assessmenet of the number of potential plotlines sort of tossed out at the audience really early, and I wasn't really sure how I felt about any of the characters or who I trusted. I think that was the effect that the writers intended, given that the show deals with clandestine operations, however I'm not a big fan of plots that pit the protagonist against "the system" and/or those that he/she is supposed to be able to trust as well as against the antagonists. I like team/family dynamics, as one might guess from my fandoms of choice.

My rule of thumb for evaluating a new program is 3-4 episodes. Pilot episodes rarely give me an accurate view of who the characters are. Case in point, I thought Hammond was mean in CotG. Hammond is now (still) my favorite general on SG-1. I also thought Data was annoying, and Riker was a pain in the neck. (Smack me. Go ahead. Please.) Pilots are like diving into an icy ocean where I've never swum before. Of course, in some cases, the water is just nasty and I get out, but in this case I thought the place might be worth exploring. Of course, I have some vested interest. The original Jaime Sommers was my childhood hero. Add to that the lure of Katee Sackhoff, and new element of the sister relationship between Jaime and Becca, and there's enough here to hold my attention.

To continue the diving analogy: It takes another epiosde to get oriented. Then in the third epiode, I can start exploring the place a little, meeting the characters and deciding if I really like them or not. If I've lasted all the way through episode 4, I'm starting to like the place and the time has come to decide whether I want to actually get invested or not. In this case, ep4 tickled the shipper in me twice. That would be the clincher folks. Anyone care to guess who I'm shipping?

Anyone have caps for ep 4 yet? I will have icons later this weekend for the first 3, but the shipper craves fullfillment.
