so_out_of_ideas: (One Path 1)
Apparently, some people thought that One Path had been abandoned. Let me assure everyone it hasn't been, although I'm currently unable to post updates every week as I was in the habit of doing. Please bear with me as I'm having a very difficult time writing due to RL issues and health stuff right now. Most of my attention and energy is therefore focused on my original work at the moment.

Also, yesterday I finally got the DVDs I need to do adaquate research for a fic project called Guardians of Grayskull which has been in the back of my head for more than ten years. --Yes, before I had any notion of the shows being released to DVD. So, I will most likely be off making notes and re-acquainting myself with the people of Eternia and Etheria.

As I mentioned in my recent "Hi, I'm still alive" post updates to my SW AUs will be made, but not as frequently as One Path readers have been spoiled into come to expect. ;)

Most of the Executor/Cloud City rescue stuff is still out of order, but I've decided to post a few chapters.

Okay. Let me preface this by saying it's sincerely a QUESTION and not a gripe or a reason to make anyone uncomfortable or defensive or whatever. I post this fic on other places besides LJ but this happens to be the place where I can interract with groups of readers, so you guys tend to be the ones I hit with with questions and such. I care about reader response because it's the only way I have to gauge whether the story's intent is being undertood by the audience. I try really hard to address the concerns brought to me by reviewers, whether positive, negative, or something in between.

I feel that we laid a considerable amount of groundwork for the Cloud City duel and what would take place there in terms of a certain line spoken by Vader. There were several scenes (albiet short ones) that dealt with Vader feeling that his life had been taken from him; that he was angry with Obi Wan for it; that he felt Padme and her children should have been his. There was even a scene in which he was alone, brooding about this, and the narrative of his thought process specifically mentioned that he intended to turn the boys against their father with a lie.

Two or three times now, I've received comments essentially saying "What on Earth? Why would Vader say 'I am your father' to Luke?" As the author, it's blatantly obvious to me why he would say it and what he wants to accomplish. Especially given the fact that he is CLEARLY delusional and has been growing more delusional ever since the night of the siege on the Temple. In my mind, even the stuff he said to Luke in the rest of that exchange of dialogue explain why he said it. Judging from this reaction, his reasons are apparently not so obvious to others.

I get the fact that the line produces a "I can't believe he said that!" response. However, that's different from "Why did he say that?"

I know One Path's Vader a lot better than anyone else reading the story, so it's possible that his motivations make sense to me because he lives in my head rather than because the story makes his thought processes clear to others. Honestly, though, the only other way I can see would have been to have him sit there like "And once I've taken care of Ani, I'll tell Luke I'm his father...mwhahahahaha!" which to me feels like an insult to the intelligence of the audience.

Are there a lot of people out there who are confused about this right now? Do I need to do something to make Vader's goals and reasoning more apparent? (If the answer turns out to be yes, I'm going to need to hold a major pow-wow with [livejournal.com profile] aruna7 and [livejournal.com profile] polgarawolf before continuing, so...be warned you two.) What exactly is missing in regard to Vader and how does it need to be addressed?
